Lost your wedding ring on the beach or outdoors? It's almost certainly still there.

A ring that slipped off on a beach, in a park or at the edge of a lake did not go anywhere. It is within a few metres of where it fell, and the person who can find it is someone nearby who already searches that kind of ground with a metal detector. Here is what to do in the next hour, what a detector can and can't do, and how to get someone looking.

Before anyone arrives

The first hour

    Stop walking

    Every step from here on adds ground someone has to cover later. Stay roughly where you were when you noticed, and ask anyone with you to do the same.

    Mark where you last had it

    Drop a pin in your phone's map app, or take a photo that shows a fixed landmark: a bench, a tree, the lifeguard post. Do it now, while you still know. Memory of a spot on a beach or a lawn fades within a day.

    Work out when you last saw it

    Sunscreen, cold water, swimming and towelling off are when rings come off. If you can name the last moment it was definitely on your hand, the search area shrinks from a whole afternoon to one place.

    Don't rake, dig or churn the ground

    It feels productive and it is the one thing that makes a later search harder. A ring pushed deeper into sand or under turf is still findable, but it takes longer, and a detector finds it far faster than hands do.

On the beach

Lost a ring on the beach? Four things that decide the search

Sand is where most rings are lost and where most are found. Whether yours comes back depends less on luck than on what you note in the first hour.

Note the time and the tide
Dry sand above the tide line keeps a ring where it fell for weeks. Wet sand below it does not: every high tide shifts and buries things. If you lost it near the water, write down the time now. A searcher will want to go at the next low tide, and the sooner, the closer it still is.
Your towel spot is the search area
Most beach rings come off in three places: taking sunscreen off your hands, drying with a towel, and the first minute in cold water. Pin the towel, and pin where you went in. A searcher can cover a 20-metre circle in an hour; a whole beach takes days.
Do not let anyone dig
Friends will want to help by sifting the sand with their hands. It pushes the ring deeper and spreads the sand it was in over a wider area. Sit on the spot instead, or leave the towel on it, and keep others off.
Tell the searcher which sand
When you post, say whether it was dry sand, the damp strip, or in the water, and how deep. Each needs a different coil, a different pattern and a different time of day. A searcher who knows this before they leave the house brings the right kit and goes straight to the right strip.

What a metal detector can do with a ring

Gold, platinum, silver and tungsten all read on a detector, and a ring is one of the easiest shapes for one to pick out. What changes is the ground it landed in.

On a beach
Dry sand swallows a ring within minutes; it sinks a few centimetres and stays close to where it fell. Wet sand near the water line is different: each tide moves things, so the sooner someone sweeps, the better. Both are exactly what a beach detectorist does every weekend.
In grass or a park
A ring in grass settles to the base of the blades and stays there, invisible from standing height and obvious to a detector. Mown grass, long grass and a field of stubble are all good ground. This is the most recoverable place to lose one.
In a lake, river or the sea
Shallow water up to waist depth is searchable with a waterproof detector, and rings do not travel far in still water. Deeper water or a current is a harder job. One thing worth knowing: gold and platinum are not magnetic, so magnet fishing will not pick up a ring; a detector is what finds it.
In snow or leaves
A detector reads straight through snow and leaf litter, so there is no need to wait for a thaw. Mark the spot well, since snow erases footprints and the ground looks different in a week.

What makes a search more likely to work

A tight area
A 20-metre circle gets searched in an hour. A whole beach does not. Every fixed point you can name, which entrance, which towel spot, which tree, is time saved.
Photos of the spot
Not of the thing: of the ground. A photo with a landmark in it lets a searcher stand where you stood. Requests with area photos get offers far faster than those without.
The story, not just the item
What you were doing, in what order, and where you noticed. Searchers read that and work out where a ring is most likely to have come off. It's what they are good at.
Answer quickly
Searchers offer for the trips they can actually make, often the same evening or the next morning. An owner who replies within the hour keeps that window open.

What makes the difference

It is not a guarantee
A ring is a small target, so the size of the area does a lot of the work. Two things decide most of it: how soon the request goes up, and how tightly you can draw the circle. Same day and a marked spot is a very different job from a whole beach a fortnight later.
Nobody is vetted
